This is a famous rod from Leonard’s offering prior to the disastrous fire in 1964, it therefore referred to as a pre-fire taper. The rod is truly unique for Leonard in that it is a parabolic taper. Parabolic tapers differ from the traditional in that they don’t consistently reduce in diameter as the tip is approached. They are more dynamic and therefore have unique casting characteristics. This taper was developed and named after Arthur C. Mills, son of the original William, founder of William Mills and Son. Starting in the 1880’s this firm was Hiram Leonard’s exclusive distributor, then his partner, and then in the early 1900’s, bought Hiram Leonard out. The firm continued to make and sell Leonard rods into the 1960’s. Arthur Mills was not only reputed to be the best fly caster in the family but also a world champion caster with many trophies. His personal taper was the only parabolic that the company regularly produced and only at ACM’s personal direction. We have brought this taper back as many generations of fly casters have felt this is one of the finest small rod designs ever produced. The rod has traditional Leonard pressed nodes, mirror tips, and bright hardware with traditional Leonard red wraps. The rod comes in a Leonard cloth rod bag and HLL standard aluminum tube.

This rod was our first limited edition in recent years. Twenty of these rods were made in 1995 and sold out within a short time. Town and Country Magazine named this rod "WBR” World’s Best Rod in their January 2001 issue. Since the rod is so popular we are issuing 20 more rods in 2001. The rod is a four weight, 7 feet in length, two piece with two mirrored tips and has a crisp Tom Maxwell dry fly action. The rod follows the Leonard tradition associated with its “Hunt” model in that is sports the rare blued hardware, burgundy guide wraps, olive tipped with black ferrule wraps, a stripped guide, hook keeper, pressed nodes and flamed cane (giving it a dark hue.) Mr. Hunt was a valued regular customer of Leonard in the early 1900’s who had an international reputation as a successful salmon fisher. The gentleman custom ordered all his Leonard rods with blued hardware and flamed cane believing the traditional bright hardware and light cane could spook fish. Starting in the 1920’s Leonard would build custom ordered rods in the “Hunt” finish for knowledgeable anglers. We feel this particular rod offers unique and beautiful ascetics and will stand out in any rod collection. Notwithstanding, it is one fabulous fly fishing rod.
